“No Mr. Trump: Tariffs and Trade Wars are not ‘Great.’”

is the PPT I used in a critical analysis of President Trump’s foreign trade strategy. The talk reviewed basic international trade theory to show that the imbalances the President complains about are rooted not in bad trade deals, but basic macro-economic balances, above all the ratio of savings to investment in national economies. After applying this reasoning to the US economy and its trade deficits with China and Europe, I show that the tariff war strategy Trump is pursuing will both fail and be harmful to America’s economy.

“THE STUMBLING DRAGON”

is the PPT I have used on my recent speaking engagements on China’s economy. In these talks and the PPT, I describe why the Chinese economy is slowing down from its earlier breakneck growth and the major headwinds it faces, both now and in the long-term future. The former headwinds include a looming financial crisis fueled by rising corporate and local government debt, as well as severe overcapacity in many industries. The latter headwinds stem from China’s aging population and failure to invest in human capital. In my view, China is still a country with huge potential. The problem is that misguided government policies and priorities are holding it back and preventing needed reforms from taking place.

“WOMEN HOLD UP HALF THE SKY”

is a PPT I have used in my recent speaking engagement on the position of China’s fairer sex. “Women hold up half the sky” is a famous quote by Chairman Mao, who, for all his many faults, did a lot for female emancipation in China. But while Chinese women have come a long way in the People’s Republic, they still face many problems. Single women wishing to pursue careers and put off marriage are tagged as “left-over” women, sexism and discrimination remains rife in the workplace, big problems exist in the work-life balance for females, and domestic violence is widespread. My speech details this less attractive side of new China, including the recent Chinese Government crackdown on feminist activists seeking to address them.
